Administrative Dependence The National Institute of Health (NIH) is an independent organization supported and financed by the Ministry of Health with the mission to improve the health of the population by providing a high level of postgraduate professional and academic training, health and clinical stimulatil research and integrating different activities to promote and facilitate the performance of the health care institutions. The NIH is oriented to co-operation and strong networking with other public health and c organizations within the country and abroad. The NIH is open for cooperation in any field of health and social development. Legal Status Institute Staff The institute employs a total of 650 people, including 350 physicians (different specialties), 150 scientists such as molecular biologists, biochemists, virologists, cytologists, geneticists, chemists, physicists, mathematicians and computer programmers. The education and scientific staff includes three full members and two corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, three members of Academia Europe, three members of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina (Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina), and one member of the “New York Academy”. There are 56 specialists with the degree of Dr. of Science [highest scientific degree in Armenia] and 135 candidates for the degree of Dr. of Science (PhD). EXPO 2002 EXHIBITION «GOLDEN APOLLO» The Best Arrangement Of The Postgraduate Education Process Structure. Administration and several departments (see below) are situated in 12-floor building. Institute has three private buildings Activities in the Soviet Period.
In 1963 according to the Government decision of the Republic of Armenia the Institute was established as the Yerevan Institute for post-graduate education of medical specialists. In the beginning the Institute was in the structure and under direct control of the Ministry of Health of Armenia. Later it was under direct control of Moscow (Ministry of Health of the Former Soviet Union). The first director of the Institute was the academic Suren Avdalbekyan. During the period of the Former Soviet Union there are 26 departments were in the Institute, mainly, of surgical, therapeutic and preventive prophiles. The main function of the Institute was the post-graduate education of medical specialists coming from different countries of the Former Soviet Union.
Activities in the Post-Soviet Period. After the collapse of the Former Soviet Union and an independence of the Republic of Armenia, our Republic faced new objectives for development of new economic, social and political relations. Based on the above mentioned the Institute was reorganized according to the necessities of the Republic. During the recent years the Institute has transformed into a serious educational, scientific, health care and methodical center as an unaccompanied in the Health System. The Charter of the Institute determines various activities, which are directed and supervised by the Scientific Board of the Institute, coordinated by two expert boards (educational-methodical and scientific-coordination) and dean's office.
In 1999, with the support of the Ministry of Health, NIH launched a new educational program – the School of Health Care Management and Administration for re-training of health care administrations and other professionals. Another objective of NIH is providing necessary support to developments in the Health Care Reform in Armenia and elaboration of scientific principles and methodology of implementation of the Health Care Policy of the Ministry of Health. The “School of Future Scientists” at the National Institute of Health of Armenia was opened in 1998 as a result of strenuous efforts of the direction of NIH and big demand from the Medical Society of Armenia. 20 residents from different departments are actively involved in scientific-research projects, carrying out in the departments. One-year program was developed to encourage young medical professionals to peruse their carrier in academic researches. School is providing special training for young professionals in Public Health Administration, Applied Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Pharmacology faculty was created in 1999. It consists of 3 chairs: - Clinical Pharmacology - Drug Policy Legislation - Pharmacy with Drug Technology Courses Pharmacology faculty deals with post-graduated education. In general the objective of the NIH is prepared health care professionals and clinicians to draw on the knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines, to define, assess and resolve public health problems. The NIH provides a variety of postgraduate courses in clinical, diagnostic and preventive medicine, public health, community and occupational health, primary care, epidemiology, nursing, etc. Due to the set-up of NIH, as a collaboration of a number of medical and social medicine departments and participating teaching hospitals, we are in position to compose experienced teaching faculty tailored to resolving any type of clinical and/or health problem. The NIH has achieved sustainable reputation both as an educational and research institution for postgraduate medical training, one of the leading same-type institutions in the CIS countries, having about 2.000 postgraduate trainees annually, approximately 50 various departments and chairs, MIS center, hostel, etc.
